Frequently Asked Questions

Q. It’s been years since my loss. Is it too late to attend the Retreat?
A. No, any time a person feels the loss is holding them back, help is needed.

Q. Is there an amount of time after my loss that I need to wait before attending the Retreat?
A. It differs from person to person. The earliest time to attend is when you have mental clarity. Frequently after a loss of this type, there is a period of time when a person mentally fades in and out. It is a natural anesthetic that dims the emotional harshness from the loss. We want you to be able to retain what you are working on, therefore waiting that bit of time will benefit you the most.

Q. I have other children, do I need to get a sitter for 9 days, or will I be able to bring them with me?
A. Bring them. At the ranch we have an age appropriate program for the children who lost siblings.

Q. How much does your program cost?
A.The cost will very, depending on retreat or conference and Individual or Couple. There is also a Family discount depending on the number and age of children attending. (See: program/scholarship page)

Q. I lost my only child. Will I have to attend with couples who have children with them?
A.No. We have a program for parents who lost an only child. We are very sensitive to your loss and understand how having children around you can be a stumbling block to your healing.

Q. My child died by suicide. Does anyone understand what I am dealing with?
A.Yes, we are planning a retreat for those who’ve lost a child through suicide. All will have that in common.

Q. What if I don’t have enough money to attend your Retreat Ranch? Do you have a finance program or payment plan?
A.No payment plans, however, we don’t want to turn anyone away. Because we know the cost a person has to put out for a funeral, we don’t want that to hinder their own healing process. There are several financial options you may want to discuss with us and consider. We offer a scholarship program that you may qualify for. Some people get personal sponsors, or you can pay through PayPal. We would like everyone to have the opportunity to attend whether they pay themselves, get a sponsor or get a scholarship. We will do everything in our power to find a way for you to attend.

Q. With the scholarship, is there any out of pocket costs?
A.Yes, a $195.00 deposit per person plus your travel costs. We may be able to help through the scholarship program for travel expenses. Contact us for an application.

Q. How long does the Ranch Retreat last?
A.The loss recovery program is 9 days long.

Q. Do I have to attend the whole time?
A.Yes, we highly recommend you attend the whole program. Your life has been altered; take this time to begin to heal. It can be a long journey; gift yourself with these 9 days.

Q. What is Grief?
A.According to Oxford dictionary Grief is: deep sorrow. Other words for grief are: sorrow, mourning, lamentation, misery, sadness, anguish, distress, heartache, heartbreak, desolation.

Q. Why do I need help with the grieving process?
A.Everyone handles grief in different ways. Because we are all designed so differently, and are taught through verbal communication or example, we all meet life’s challenges individually. We understand that because of the ways we are taught to address loss, there could be some basic practices missing that could otherwise help through the grieving process.

Q. Why can’t I grieve alone?
A.You can. However, when faced with a loss, it intensifies the “aloneness”. We have found, being with others that have experienced the same type of loss helps you to realize that you are not alone. It’s helpful to know there are others who understand the feelings. Maybe not the relationship you had with your child, but they are all experiencing the emotional rollercoaster you are going through. You are not alone.

Q. Is it possible to have a productive and fruitful life again?
A.Yes, just like any physical healing, things take time. We know you will never stop loving and missing the child who is gone, but, we do believe that with a better understanding of how you deal with grief coupled with a willingness to address your vulnerability, feelings and emotions, you will be on the path to a joy-filled life.
